Brenda was one strange employer! She kept on borrowing money from me, and she kept on ordering take aways, and when it arrived, she would tell me in this wailing voice that as she only uses her card, could I please pay the cash, and she will give it back. Then she asked me if I would mind doing the cooking, which I didn't, except if I didn't buy stuff to cook, there was nothing to cook! And then she was quite upset if I sometimes cook South African, our food being not too healthy, as we love sweet, caramalised pumpkin or sweet potato with our food! And all this time I kept tags of what I bought, and she promised to pay me back together with my salary. The first month nothing extra was paid, and when I moaned, she wailed again that she doesn't carry cash, and she had forgotten, but it would all be on my next cheque! Anyway, she flipped her lid when I told her to also put the money that I used to do their washing on my cheque, then gave me five dollars to get quarters for the machine, but as the washer used six, and the drier eight, that was just enough for one and a half wash, and when I asked again the next time, she went through the roof. So I shouted back that I was doing her a favour by doing the washing, and that I refuse to in future use my own money. I knew that once we were in her house that was being remodeled there would be a housekeeper, and really did not mind helping her out with some of the chores. I was a nanny and not an au-pair. But all was not doom and gloom, and as she went away a lot for work, I was alone with Manos for long stretches. After I took him to school in the mornings, I would get myself a bagel, the best ever, near the school, and a take-away coffee and go down to the beach, where I was sure of some or other entertainment most times! There was always a photo shoot, or a film being made, and if not, I just watched the bold and the beautiful people parading up and down, showing of their bronzed bodies! After about six weeks in Miami, Vassilis suddenly arrived, and life suddenly became exciting. But when he first arrived and opened the fridge to have breakfast, he suddenly roared like a cross lion, and Brenda had the fright of her life, and Manos stood wide eyed, while Vassilis inspected the fridge. Then he came to me, and me also a bitty wide eyed, I stood as if paralised, and he asked me harshly:'My God Christina, what do you eat?' I explained that I buy stuff as I needed it, but he suddenly turned to Brenda, and really gave her tongue, and from what I could make out, she had been doing this with the previous nanny. He then disappeared, and I took the child to school, and when I came back the fridge was stacked with meat, and cheeses, even some philly, and fruit and veggies, and Brenda was icy cold towards me. I was seriously thinking that my empty nest, ghosts and all, was much better than this, but I decided to stick it out, as I would never again be able to come here, and anyhow, she was going to Germany for work within the next few days! In the meantime, after Vassilis enquired why I don't swim downstairs with Manos, I started going down again, but my would be lover had not given up on me, and when he realised I was there, he came down and laid himself down across from me, and gave me the most beautiful smiles. But as he was still parading in that bally g-string, I was praying that Vassilis was not watching from above!
